Concerns on installing long-throw sprinklers in tall halls

    Get PDF
There are concerns over long-throw sprinkler installation in halls with high ceilings which are likely to store large amount of combustible materials. These concerns will be addressed in this paper. At the moment, it is unknown whether such sprinkler installation can protect high-ceiling halls which store large amount of combustibles. The concept should be further explored with in-depth research through full-scale burning experiments with big fires.published_or_final_versio

Reduction of false sharing by using process affinity in page-based distributed shared memory mutiprocessor systems

    Get PDF
In page-based distributed shared memory systems, a large page size makes efficient use of interconnection network, but increases the chance of false sharing, while a small page size reduces the level of false sharing but results in an inefficient use of the network. This paper proposes a technique that uses process affinity to achieve data pages clustering so as to optimize the temporal data locality on DSM systems, and therefore reduces the chance of false sharing and improves the data locality. To quantify the degree of process affinity for a piece of data, a measure called process affinity index is used that indicates the closeness between this piece of data and the process. Simulation results show that process affinity technique improves the execution performance as page size increases due to the effective reduction of fair sharing. In the best case an order of magnitude performance improvement is achieved.published_or_final_versio

Multithreaded self-scheduling: application of multithreading on loop scheduling for distributed shared memory multiprocessor

    Get PDF
The 1st International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel, Brisbane, Australia, 19-21 April 1995A new loop scheduling scheme called multithreaded self-scheduling (MSS) for distributed shared memory multiprocessor is proposed. Based on the principles of multithreading, MSS attempts to hide the remote memory access latencies by switching between multiple contexts of threads. Consequently, loops scheduled by using MSS can obtain better performance comparing to the single-thread approaches. In this paper, a series of simulation results corresponding to various parameter changes are presented, which provides a measure of the effectiveness of MSS under different boundary conditions and suggests the ways for further improvements.published_or_final_versio

A multi-lamp heliodon for architectural schools

    Get PDF
Heliodons have been developed to simulate sunlight direction in relation to a building model. For placing the building model, heliodons can be divided into two categories. In one category, the model is to be tilted, and normally also rotated [1,2,3]. In the other category, the model is to be placed horizontally, and normally also stationary [4,5,6]. The later category of heliodons, with a horizontally placed building model, and with the simulated sunlight moving around it, will certainly help architectural students visualise the change of sunlight direction around a building and the related effect on insolation and shading. Furthermore, in both categories, there are heliodons developed [7,8] to examine nnual nsolation/shading on massing models by putting red, green, blue lamps (i.e. dichromatic lamps) respectively at positions for June, September/ March, December, thus improving the capability of the heliodons. In the pursuit of a heliodon capable of demonstrating solar movement, offering the speed of operation as demanded by architectural schools, and occupying a space generally affordable, and primarily suitable for use to test buildings of the climatic region of South China where Hong Kong is located, a multi-lamp heliodon has been developed. This paper reports on this multi-lamp heliodon, which consists of 69 fixed quartz lamps, and 6 dichromatic lamps. It also has the capability of investigating the building model with dichromatic lamps, without the demand of additional space which is always a concern now in architectural schools.http://www.bse.polyu.edu.hk/researchCentre/Fire_Engineering/summary_of_output/journal/IJAS/V1/p.46-58.pd

    加强地下空间与地上自然景物和人造美景的相互和谐连接方案的讨论

Underground space is conceived by most people as separated from nature. Bringing the good virtues of nature, predominantly natural light, sunshine, sky vision, wind, rain, greenery, suitably in certain way and proportion into underground space in a sustainable way would greatly enhance the quality of underground space. This paper discusses some proposals on the synergistic and harmonious integration of underground space with prime and sustainable features aboveground, including using Golden Ratio in urban design and city planning. postprin
